Dear Sponsor, Aloha! We welcome you to the East-West Medical
Research Institute, located in beautiful Honolulu. Youll find us at the Ala Moana Pacific Center near the famed Ala Moana Center shopping complex.
About
the Institute Hawaii, with its unique, racially diverse population has been underutilized as a site for clinical trials. Hawaii is ideally suited to this activity, with a statewide population of 1.3 million (900,000 on the island of Oahu) that includes the following ethnic groups:
* Caucasians: 23 percent
* Japanese: 20 percent
* Mixed/part-Hawaiian: 18.6 percent
* Mixed/non-Hawaiian 18.4 percent
* Filipino: 10.5 percent
* Chinese 4.6 percent
* Other, including Hawaiian, Korean, Samoan and African-American: 4.5 percent
Subject recruitment and retention is typically better in Hawaii than on the U.S. mainland because of local cultural emphasis on service to others, and limited out-of-state travel due to the geographic isolation of the Islands.
Seventy-five percent of the state's 1.3 million population resides within a 25-mile radius of our site.
The strength of our Research lies in our Experience and the Ethnic Diversity and Close Proximity of our Island Population.
Honolulu is easily accessible, with frequent nonstop flights from most
major U.S. cities and competitive airfares. Our site is just 15 minutes
from the airport and major hotels. All major airlines and car rental
companies serve Honolulu, and most HOTELS provide data port hook-ups.
Detailed information about hotels, restaurants, attractions and
recreation can be found on the Web site of the Hawaii Visitors and
Convention Bureau at www.gohawaii.com.

Advantages of Conducting Clinical Trials at EWMRI
Fast Recruitment and Approval The cornerstone of EWMRI's ability to rapidly recruit clinical research subjects is our database, containing the complete medical records of more than 14,000 people with a wide variety of cardiovascular, metabolic, endocrine and other diseases. This database includes more than 4,000 active patients with diabetes, 3,000 with hyperlipidemia, 3,000 with hypertension and 600 with osteoporosis. As clinical research studies are conducted with specialists in other medical fields, their patients are being added to our database. Each person's record contains a complete listing of current and past medical problems, medications, allergies and other detailed medical information, allowing us to develop within minutes a list of potential study subjects meeting the most exacting criteria.
We are able to utilize a centralized institutional review board, with approvals usually obtained within 10 days. Contracts are finalized quickly, typically within 1-2 weeks.
On-Site Testing and Other Support Capabilities The East-West Medical Research Institute has the staff, facilities and equipment to perform a variety of laboratory and diagnostic tests and other support services, including on-site lab, accredited by CLIA; EKGs; nutritional intervention, monitoring and education; computerized nutrient analysis of diets; continuous blood pressure monitoring; and dynamic endocrine testing.
We have excellent ongoing relationships with imaging facilities, sleep labs, and respiratory clinics which can seamlessly perform MRI, CT, PET, nuclear scans, PFTs, and other critical procedures.
Experienced Staff In addition to maintaining a busy medical practice, Dr. Fitz-Patrick has been active in medical research for much of the past 20 years. His research results have been published in prestigious medical journals around the world, and he has received research awards from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, McGill University, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, the American College of Physicians and, in Honolulu, Straub Clinic & Hospital and the Straub Medical Research and Education Foundation. He is currently chairman of the Hawaii State Diabetes Task Force and the Hawaii Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists.
Dr. Fitz-Patrick is assisted by 2 sub-investigators, 5 well-trained and experienced full-time study coordinators, and 4 full-time research assistants.
Excellent Communications, Technology and Quality EWR assigns one contact person to each trial, and offers sponsors a dedicated phone line so we are easily accessible. Communication is also available via E-mail.
Our technologically advanced systems feature electronic medical records, an automated patient reminder system and a high-speed Internet access (Cable) line in all monitor rooms.
Quality is assured through accurate record-keeping and documentation, good clinical practices, established SOPs and efficient business operations.

HAWAII CULTURE AND CLIMATE Business attire in Hawaii is usually informal, reflecting our casual island lifestyle. Men more often wear aloha (Hawaiian print) shirts or a simple sports shirt and slacks rather than business suits. Women also dress more casually than their mainland counterparts, and may wear traditional Hawaiian dresses (muumuus), especially on Fridays.
Our climate is temperate, with only two seasons (and not even that, by the standards of many mainlanders!). In summer, May through October, the average daytime temperature is 85 degrees, although temperatures may reach the low 90s. In our version of winter, November through April, the average daytime temperature is 78 degrees, although ocean breezes may make it may feel cooler. Nighttime temperatures are approximately 10 degrees lower. Balmy trade winds keep us cool during most of the summer and part of the winter, and may produce nighttime or early morning showers. Wettest months are November through March.
We look forward to working with you. In the meantime, if you
have any questions or special requests, please
